Back problems make up the largest cause for lost productivity
and worker compensation claims in the US. Various procedures
are used to treat degenerative diseases that affect the spine.
But if conservative treatments are unsuccessful, the patient may
need surgery that usually involves implants. Each year,
approximately 550,000 spinal fusion procedures are completed
worldwide.
A new spinal procedure that maintains motion employs an
artificial disc to replace the natural disc. It is projected that disc
replacement will gradually begin to replace fusion. In over 50%
of cases, lower back pain is associated with the facet joints.
Facets are joints at each level of the spine. For artificial discs to
successfully replace fusion, we estimate facet joint replacement
will be needed in about half the cases.
Quantum™ Spinal Products
Quantum Orthopedics’ motion preservation strategy consists of
facet joint replacement and other Conservative Motion
Preservation™ technologies. Conservative Motion Preservation
technologies relate to the development of implants and
procedures that alleviate spinal conditions while maintaining the
natural flexibility and structure of the spine. Facet degeneration
is currently a condition without a suitable treatment.
Quantum’s Zyre™ Facet Arthroplasty System may be placed
using a posterior, minimally invasive approach. The Zyre will be
a minimally invasive and conservative therapeutic option to
avoid fusion in patients with chronic facet joint pain. Highly
respected orthopedic spine surgeons have enthusiastically
embraced Quantum’s facet arthroplasty technology. Zyre is a
tissue sparing device designed to augment and enhance native
facet function. Zyre is not approved for use in the United States.
